“Plants bring us the love, the nourishing power of the sun, which is the same energy of all the stars, of all light. These cosmic energies emanated by plants thus nourish, sustain and make grow our own astral body. In this way the existence of plants is a great offering, a sacrifice.”

I’m reflecting back on my life and recognizing that it was rarely the joyful moments that changed my world view, at least not dramatically. It was the bitter pill. The lost relationship, the job, the loved one, the worst case scenario, and a flat tire, happening all at once. How I dealt, how I spoke to the people surrounding me. Anugraha~ the grace, that I allowed to flow through me despite my preference for something different.

The sunny vacation, the Yoga retreat or training may open a new portal in the mind and heart acting as a reminder to me of what a bigger life can look like. Providing, a dose of hope, an insight into a different reality, widening my sense of possibility, to allow me to soldier on with difficult conversations, setting stronger boundaries, and continuing to establish an unwavering connection to myself.

In 2018, my only resolution is for more peace in my home and in my inner circle ( and maybe that bit about gliding around looking winter fabulous). I’m no longer accepting nonsense or noise, it’s full steam ahead.

Many Blessings in 2018,
Colleen Lila

Namaste,

We have moved into Vata season, governed by the elements, air + ether. It is at juncture in seasons and in life, that are we are most vulnerable to creating imbalance in our bodies.

Like the planet, our bodies hang in delicate homeostasis, there are many external factors that can disrupt this balance. These external factors are termed parinama samyoga- temporal factors which include: passage of time, seasonal changes, life and cycle changes. It is during this time that it is most important for us to follow a diet that decreases the accumulation of dosha before it enters deeper layers of tissue, this diet is alleviating or in sanskrit, prasama.
In Fall this diet is primarily based in local seasonal, organic vegetables like squashes and green leafy vegetables that are rich, unctuous, and deeply grounding, such as root vegetable. Ayurveda is the oldest continuously practiced medicine that remains relevant and current as it is faithful to the rhythms of the planet and the smaller rhythms of the individual seeking to bring the individual into harmony with the larger rhythms of the surrounding world. The primary aim is to avoid disease states, in Ayurveda the term disease state has a much broader definition than in western medicine. A disease state, according to Ayurveda is a state of imbalance that began as the accumulation of too much of one or two elements in the body. The way to overcome accumulation in the body id through the, Three Pillars of Health.

The Three Pillars of Health:
Ahara-diet
Vihara-lifestyle
Ausada- herbs

Sancaya-? Prakopa-? Prasama-?

SEASONAL CHANGES:
Dosa Spring Summer Fall/Winter
Vata ? ? ?
Pitta ? ? ?
Kapha ? ? ?

In Ayurveda states of disease all classified in stages, alleviation becomes more difficult as we progress through the stages of disease.

Six Stages of Disease:
Sancaya: accumulation
Prakopa: aggravation
Prasara: dissemination
Sthanasamsraya: localization
Vyakti: manifestation
Bheda: differentiation
Stages of disease manifest in the order listed above. The aggravated doshas move through the bodies channels, from the center to the periphery. The two mobile dhatus are rasa (plasma) and rakta (blood).

Vrddhi-increased state, Ksaya-decreased state. In the prasara stage we can see the dosha vrddhi signs, we can see some systemic manifestations of the dosa, ex. extreme dryness of the skin, blackish coloring. If we do not get balanced in the prasara stage we move into sthanasamsrayastage, the angry dosha moves along in rasa and rakta settle into a vulnerable place in the body called, khaivagunya= kha-space, vaigunya-impairment/defect. A Khavaigunya can be a genetic predisposition, a previous injury or an area of continued abuse of neglect in the body.

In vata signs of an increase appear as emaciation.
ABNORMAL STATES OF THE DOSAS, DHATUS & MALAS:

Vriddhi Lakshanas: vata- emaciation, catabolic process on the body, it doesn’t build it depletes.
Temples hollow
Veins
blackish/grayish/ashen discoloration in the skin- circles under the eyes
Joints prominent
Dehydrated
Abnormality, tics, tremors, roll shoulders, turn head, antsy, quivering lips, spasms/fine tremors in the muscles, heart palpitations etc. end of the range, epilepsy, Parkinson’s
Constipation- painful, dry, hard, infrequent, ease of transit and/or frequency changes. Bowels should move every day, it’s not ‘optimal’ to move bowels less, output and input should be balanced, toxins getting reabsorbed, water is getting reabsorbed. Three different herbal remedies to get them to do this is probably not best, bloating discomfort, passing gas are signs they need help.
Loss of sense, poor taste perception, loss of feeling, tinnitus, insomnia -vata governs the 5 senses, if it’s eyes but the eyes are red then it could be pitta and vata, two dosas involved.
Meals and sleep, three hours before bed
Excess talking is a vrddhi lakshana of vata, content irrelevant.
Higher mental function- confusion, not really understanding things, cognitive impairment, not fully understanding things
Joint and muscle pain- warm sesame, mahanarayan oil, castor oil
Emotions- anxiety, fear, restlessness (physically and mentally) impending doom, self conscious, people are judging them,
Ksaya Lakshana: of vata- when vata is ksaya
Aversion to talking
Loss of appetite
Hyper salivation
Tired
Depression

Vrddhi Pitta:
yellowish/reddish discoloration of the skin/stools/urine/eyes- ranges from a little to a lot (yellowish eyes ? jaundice)
Hot red angry,’itis’, superficial inflammation of the skin, pittas are more reactive by nature
People with allergies tend to shy away from herbal and topical interventions because they tend to react to things.
Increase body temperature and burning, feel they are burning up, they feel parched and thirsty, always thirsty
Disturbed sleep, predominately vata or pitta?
Fainting, vertigo, dizziness
Weakness of the sense organs particularly the eyes
Bitter taste and sour belches
Emotional state, angry, irritable, road rage, criticism (explosive), fighting with people

Ksaya Pitta:
Dull complexion
Slow bowels
Decreased body temperature

Pitta provides the home for fire and water etc. therefore if pitta is high in pitta the aggravation will be higher. Pitta is hot, sharp, oily, light, liquid. When pitta agni is too hot the food will be burned and not absorbed. Digestion is too sharp the absorption is poor.

Vata will tend towards irregular agni vishama, vata is cold, rough, dry, hard, light, mobile. If vata eats too much cold food or someone with a vata imbalance eats too much cold food the agni will become cold…sometimes they can digest the food and sometimes they cannot.

Before Summer Rain

Suddenly, from all the green around you,
something-you don’t know what-has disappeared;
you feel it creeping closer to the window,
in total silence. From the nearby wood

you hear the urgent whistling of a plover,
reminding you of someone’s Saint Jerome:
so much solitude and passion come
from that one voice, whose fierce request the downpour

will grant. The walls, with their ancient portraits, glide
away from us, cautiously, as though
they weren’t supposed to hear what we are saying.

And reflected on the faded tapestries now;
the chill, uncertain sunlight of those long
childhood hours when you were so afraid.

Dear Friends,

My heart is breaking I can barely eat, sleep or teach. As I was emotionally railing over my son leaving for college, as I was feeling the threat of an empty nest and all the changes and implications that come with this seemingly major life shift… my dear friend, Stardove’s, 19 year old son Koshari was senselessly murdered on Molokai, a blow to the head by a complete stranger, no known motive or affiliation (Koshari Waits). I fell to my knees. I have my son, he’s alive… while her firstborn is dead.

Stardove & Koshari 1996

This comes on the wake of the shooting in Santa Barbara by Eliot Rodger and the senseless cries that drown out the tragedy that scream for rights to be armed. I watched the entire video of Eliot’s self named retribution it has since been taken down from You Tube, he is a tragic, lost, self-possessed individual, overcome with grief turned into rage, misdirected by mysogyny and social myths; isolated by mental illness, entitlement and blame. He is one of many victims of a society steeped in the illusion of what we call social ‘norms’ -materialist expectations of suceess and achievement based in objectification, the acquisition of trophies (beauty and stuff) of which sexism, mental illness and rage are all a by-product.

Meanwhile, the ice caps are melting, Fukushima is threatening to extinquish the human race and people are watching TV, eating poison -or- alternatively they are smugly eating organic food in their massive homes and living the lie of complacency generated by the corporate machine, buy this, wear this and don’t notice your mind has been hijacked by commercial images and excellent marketing strategy.

Yoga plays into this, it plays into notions of spiritual superiority and exceptionalism…not us, but them. PLEASE WATCH Michael C. Ruppert, part 6. A fantastic quote by a realized being Adyashanti ‘You can use meditation to fall asleep as well as WAKE up. It’s time to WAKE UP! Don’t you agree? Playing by the established set of rules no longer works for any of us.

I don’t say this to upset or depress you, if you’re reading this you are likely of the same mind when it comes to the outrage you feel for the general asleepness of the world at large. I say this to rally you. Our concerns for stuff and image are more than a minor flaw in the human condition, the media and all the bullsh*t notions of sucess and togetherness it relentlessly stuffs down our throats is more than marketing strategy and business as usual. It’s a poisenous infection to our collective health, safety and well being as humans. As we kill each other the machine is eating us alive, the SUV’s and monstrous houses we live in are our coffins.

So, Yoga world are we going to use our voices -or- are we going to promote another corporate Yoga brand to promote ourselves and our injured ego’s?

Are we going to fall prey to the machine and let it swallow us whole and along with it the opportunity for change..the chance to give a platform to the ideas and concepts that could save our planet and the human race.

I’m sure as F*@K not!

Maya Angelou
Still I Rise

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I’ll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? ‘Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I’ll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?

Shoulders falling down like teardrops, Weakened by my soulful cries?

Does my haughtiness offend you?

Don’t you take it awful hard ‘Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines Diggin’ in my own backyard.

You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I’ll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you? Does it come as a surprise That I dance like I’ve got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history’s shame I rise
Up from a past
that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling
I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise

Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.

Thanksgiving is my favorite of all the American holidays, the idea of gathering to break bread with those we love inspires me to make creative and meaningful offerings. I found a beautiful blessing written by one of my favorite poets, John O’ Donahue that I’d like to share with you, perhaps you would like to share it with your family and loved ones.

Grace Before Meals

As we begin this meal with grace,
Let us become aware of the memory
Carried inside the food before us:
The quiver of the seed
Awakening of the earth,
Unfolding in a trust of roots
And slender stems of growth,
On its voyage toward harvest,
The kiss of the rain and the surge of the sun;
The innocence of animal soul
That never spoke a word,
Nourished by the earth
To become today our food;
The work of all the strangers
Whose hands prepared it,
The privilege of wealth and health
That enables us to feast and celebrate.

As many of you know my dear friend, Chris Tompkins is presenting this weekend for the Lila Tandava TT on the history, practice and philosophy of Yoga. This weekend is open to the public and is broken down into segments. You are all welcome to attend this workshop. Chris flew in from Boulder, Co. so it’s a huge treat to have him with us. I hope you are able to attend. Below is an interview I did with Chris this summer on using this practice as a method for transformation through radical self acceptance, check it out!
